School Gardens Project Assistant
Application Deadline: Tuesday February, 16th 2010
Duration: Temporary, March to October 2010
Hours: 10 hours per week. During the months of April and May, some additional hours will be required.
Wage: $11-$15 per hour, based on experience

Description
The Regional Environmental Council, Inc. (REC), a grassroots, nonprofit, environmental justice organization with a 38-year history of working for environmental sustainability and social justice, is seeking candidates for our School Gardens Project Assistant. This part-time, temporary position will be responsible for supporting the Worcester School Garden Initiative, a collaborative effort between the REC’s Food Justice Program and the Worcester Advisory Food Policy Council’s Hunger-Free & Healthy Project. The initiative is designed to bring the educational, nutritional, and social benefits of gardening to Worcester Public Schools. The School Gardens Project Assistant will provide support in accomplishing the following goals:

o Facilitating a partnership between the REC, Hunger-Free & Healthy, and the Worcester Public Schools.
o Building 5 new gardens at Worcester Public Schools.
o Compiling and creating educational resources for use in Worcester Public Schools.
o Providing ongoing technical and other support to school principals, teachers and administrators.


Responsibilities:
1. project planning and implementation
2. curriculum research
3. purchasing supplies, recruiting and managing volunteers, designing and building 5 new raised-bed
gardens
4. other duties as assigned

Skills and Experience
We are especially seeking candidates with the following skills and experience:
o Gardening (including, planning and designing)
o Youth work (particularly with low-income urban youth of
color)
o Strong organizational skills, ability to set and keep
deadlines, attention to detail
o Demonstrated interest in and commitment to
environmental and social justice

o Curriculum development or teaching
experience
o Light to medium construction skills
o Volunteer recruitment and management
experience
o Comfort with MSOffice (Word, Excel,
Outlook, etc.)

Urban Agriculture Expert CARE Closing date: 15 Feb 2010 Location: Liberia - Monrovia, Liberia

CARE is seeking an Urban Agriculture Expert for a proposed, USAID – funded, large-scale, multi-year Food and Enterprise Development Program to be based in Monrovia, Liberia. The Food and Enterprise Development (FED) Program will be implemented to achieve the following objectives: 1.) increase agricultural productivity and profitability; 2.) stimulate private enterprise growth and investment; and 3.) build local technical and managerial human resources to sustain and expand accomplishments achieved under objectives one and two.

The selected candidate will be primarily responsible for designing and overseeing the implementation of an innovative and sustainable peri-urban agriculture project component in the Monrovia vicinity. This position is associated with Towne's Harvest Garden (THG) , a collaborative project of the College of Agriculture, and the Department of Health and Human Development in the College of Education, Health & Human Development. Towne's Harvest Garden is a 3 acre vegetable farm which serves as an outdoor classroom and laboratory for the Sustainable Food and Bioenergy Systems (SFBS) degree program. The garden project includes a Community Supported Agriculture Program, a growing partnership with the Gallatin Valley Food Bank, and outreach and sales at two community farmers' markets and one campus farm stand. The Towne s Harvest Garden is a site for SFBS internships as well as service learning on campus, and community service.

Urban Agriculture Team (5 positions): Members maintain a 1-acre urban community farm and the surrounding park area. They grow and distribute over 6,000 pounds of produce to volunteers, local food pantries and kitchens. They promote principles of gardening, composting, seed starting, and nutrition to 100 elementary students in 4 local schools. They increase community awareness of Beardsley Community Farm by planning festivals and special seasonal events.

Position: WWCP Farm Educator Status: Full-Time / Salaried Reports to: Executive Director of WWCP

Weavers Way Community Programs (WWCP) is the non-profit arm of Weavers Way Co-op. WWCP programs includes the Marketplace partnership with local schools and Farm Education.
WWCP’s Farm Education is a dynamic, interactive program that takes place at Weavers Way Farm, a two-acre urban production farm on land at Awbury Arboretum in Germantown, as well as other locations. Students of all ages, from pre-school to college, as well as community groups, visit the farm on a regular basis to learn about urban agriculture and the locally grown food movement. WWCP currently manages a garden at a local homeless shelter. Additional gardens at other locations are being considered for the 2010-growing season. Farm education also takes place at Weavers Way’s CSA at Saul Agricultural High School under the direction of the CSA’s farm managers.

The Farm Educator will coordinate WWCP current programs, implement farm-based education for a variety of groups, and participate in planning and implementation of additional programs and sites. Current WWCP programs include: Farm education at Weavers Way Farm and Children’s Garden
The Hope Garden, a one-quarter-acre farm at Stenton Family Manor (a homeless shelter for families) Additional responsibilities include vegetable production at the children’s garden and Stenton, sale of produce at weekly farmer’s markets, volunteer management, and community outreach. Working with community organizations, educational institutions, and other groups of children and adults, the educator’s purpose is to increase the community’s knowledge of, and experience with, urban agriculture.

The successful candidate will have experience in and desire to deliver educational programs to a diverse audience; prior training in and working knowledge of organic vegetable crop management including compost-making, bed preparation, seed-starting, growing, harvesting, post-harvest care, and sales; and experience in supervising farm interns.

Qualifications
Commitment to the mission and goals of Weavers Way Community Programs and Co-op.
Ability to work well with students of all ages, and a variety of cultures.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Attention to detail and strong organizational skills.
Strong work ethic, mature judgment, and problem solving skills.
Demonstrated ability to work with committees and volunteers.
Must be creative, have positive attitude, and willingness to help expand programming.
Strong verbal communication skills and ability to explain initiatives of Weavers Way community Programs, Farm and Co-op.
Ability to speak about our programs for radio, television, and print media.
Ability to operate and perform maintenance on farm tools such as a rototiller, weed-eater, and mower.
Ability to work outdoors in adverse conditions and lift up to 40 pounds.

Salary to be determined based on experience. Position includes standard Weavers Way benefits for FT employee, including health insurance. A registered and insured vehicle is needed as position involves work at multiple locations in Northwest Philadelphia. The farm educator will need to obtain the PA Child Abuse and Criminal History clearances immediately upon hiring.

The schedule varies according to time of year. Applicant should be willing to work one weekend day if necessary during the spring, summer, and fall seasons. It is anticipated that during the growing season, the days will be quite long. Overtime above 50 hours/week may be accumulated and used for vacation (beyond the time in the Personnel Policy Manual) up to a maximum of 2 weeks.

The Executive Director will work variable hours, with an average of 20 hours per week, primarily from home. Core program work takes place from January to April and tapers off to July. Ongoing work continues through the year. Flexibility is essential.
