"This inventory currently lists over 40 centres for Australia, drawn from all six States and the Australian Capital Territory, bar the Northern Territory. Many other centres are believed to be in existence or in very early formative stages of development. The centres listed vary widely in size, number of active site users, focus and range of activities undertaken, period of establishment, etc. They extend from large, highly organised centres with government support (usually local government), to the communal gardening efforts of small groups of people or small demonstration sites, through to exciting new 'Community Supported Agriculture' business ventures such as that undertaken by Lismore Challenge City Farm. This extraordinary range, highlights the fact that it is not so much the size of the centre but the 'principles' and methods of resource management being practised on-site that matter, and that food production systems if well designed and maintained can be highly productive in both small and large areas."
